CD: Feel Free Live Good
DJ / producer Chris Coco is back with a super-Balearic, eclectic selection of mellow electronic music. After adventures with the band City Reverb and performing as the DJ element for Robbie Williams, as well as his usual circuit of global DJ dates, compilations, mixes and radio shows, Coco took a few months out to prepare these musical delights at 99, his studio in Camden, London.
With the help of a laptop, a microphone, some very old synths and a bunch of good friends who would pop in and lay down vocals and musical parts for Coco to manipulate and process, he has created a wonderful collection of tunes. This album will work at a beach side barbecue or an intimate dinner party, but there is enough going on for it be a good headphone listen too. Though the music ranges from deep house to ambient to chillout to dub it is all held together by an atmospheric, almost romantic feel that he brings to all his productions.
Steve Miller from chill dons Afterlife called it ‘fresh and quirky’ and there is a playful quality to the stylistic mash up. As if Coco is searching for the lost soul of Balearic classics and the anything-goes magic found in killer comps like the first few editions of the Cafe Del Mar series.
The set is built around Summertime, a simple and effective song that has been drifting out of all the right beachfront bars in Ibiza this (northern) summer. Either side of this are My Beach House, featuring some fine Spanish guitar work from Nick, actually a Belgian who hasn’t been to a beach for five years; and Fizz, a cheeky cocktail bar number with the real sound of champagne corks popping integrated into the rhythm.
Other highlights include album closer Fragile Beauty, coming on like the soundtrack for a tragic French love story; City Knows Your Name, a dubby workout about lost love in Tokyo featuring Japanese poet Iko; and Beards Of Paradise, a solid slice of dubby space disco.
Abstract visuals created by Anthony Burrill and Jack Featherstone to accompany a track by Chris Coco called 8808 taken from his current album Feel Free Live Good on One World Music. Anthony and Chris are long-time friends and collaborators. Anthony also designed the album artwork with the help of the No Days Off team.
